Four trends that will change social media in 2017

A consumer’s reliance on convenient communication channels will contribute to the rise of Chatbots in 2017 as more people get used to talking to their phone rather than tapping in information.

Fake News

The UK and US governments have simultaneously vowed to crack down on fake news during 2017. Following a tumultuous 2016 where Britain shocked politicians and voted to leave the EU, alongside former reality star, Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States, the spread of incorrect information for propaganda purposes has become a hot topic both in parliament and across news organisations worldwide.

After concerns that inaccurate articles posing as journalism could become a threat to democracy, in addition to findings from RadiumOne stating that 77% of content is being shared via Dark Social - a term used to describe the sharing of content that occurs outside of what can be tracked, the need to crack down on toxic information online has never been more crucial. 

Video

With video expected to account for 80% of global internet traffic by 2019 according to Cisco Systems, the need for interactive media has never been more imperative.

YouTube was built with the aim of publishing videos that capture real, unfiltered moments and at a time when fake news stories have become so prevalent, the need for authentic content is more important than ever.

Google is increasingly listing videos higher up in search engines and companies are beginning to come around to the idea that for people everywhere, the human voice is the best form of communication.
